South Africa summer 23/24

Mar 9, 2024 | Climate Crisis, Heatwaves

For the first time in recorded history, global temperature anomalies were above 2°C for four consecutive days, February 8-11

The impact of this was felt a few days later in South Africa with heatwave conditions experienced in parts of the country from Feb 17-25 - the longest stretch of heat days for the entire 2023/24 summer.

There have been 7 heatwave events this summer

1. Oct 3-7
2. Oct 25-27
3. Nov 11-13
4. Nov 19-24
5. Nov 28-29
6. Dec 3-5
7. Feb 17-25 (9 days)

In early March, which is considered an autumn month we have seen March records tumble

And now have large areas under a heatwave advisory for the period March 9-12 - no doubt some more March records will fall during this event.

All this comes with the background longterm global heating at 1.3ºC and the running mean for the last 12 months at 1.56ºC

This has had an impact on harvest estimates, but not as severe as during the 2015/16 El Nino.
